Our flagship Longprimer Sovereign Bible, bound in sumptuous black Highland goatskin.

First printed in 1952, the King James Version Longprimer Bible is a sumptuous, traditional reference setting of the Authorized Version. Developed by Oxford University Press and now published exclusively by R. L. Allan, it has for many years been our flagship Bible, renowned the world over for its clarity of type and our beautiful bindings.

The Longprimer Sovereign edition retains the same clear, bold type as the standard Longprimer but is printed on a 40gsm writable Bible paper with the highest levels of opacity, and increased margins (one inch on outside and bottom edges) to show the text block off to greatest effect and further enhance the reading experience.

Black Highland goatskin with full yapp and red under gold page edges, leather-lined in dark blue with double gilt lines inside, three navy ribbon markers, with Allan presentation pages and family record, dictionary of proper names, subject index, concordance, 32 pages lined writing paper and 16 pages of Oxford Bible maps.

This Bible is excellent quality (typical of all Allan bindings). It is also a beautiful bible, bound in some very good color, ribbon, gilt choices. Though I will never understand the generous margins on the outside of the text but none on the inner margin. Is it difficult to center the text? This would be true of most publishers. Having the text off center just looks funny imo. No wide margin needed, but generous margins on the outer and inner text block would be nice (many people do write notes on the inner margin as well). Other than this complaint, the bible is 5 stars in all other aspects.

I received my Allan LP in March so I have had sometime to read it and kinda feel it out. First of all, the service at EV bible was just amazing I received the Bible faster than expected. The leather is the best I have felt and seen, and I have had other RL Allan bibles and cambridge bibles, this Bible is truely the finest I have owned. The full yapp is awesome! For how supple the leather is, it is sturdy. The spine is flexible but not flimsy.

The paper is what I love the most, it is thick, very white, and the bold print pops off the page. If you think the print is not large enough, do not worry the bold print more than compensates for readablity. I can go on and on about the maps the lined note paper in the back etc…..if you love the KJV you CANNOT GO WRONG with this bible!!!

I just received this Bible today and it is incredible.

I decided to go with the Black Highland Goatskin because I already own several brown covered bibles and I was attracted to the “vintage look” of the black cover. The leather is nice and supple and has a really full/deep grain (if that makes sense). I also noticed that the black color is very rich and dark. To me, it seems darker in person than the photos depict on this website. It looks really great.

The binding is done in true Allan style: it should last several lifetimes.

Now to the paper: THIS is really where the Sovereign shines, in my opinion. The paper is thick, but not bulky. It has a wonderful silky touch and it seems perfect for note-taking (if I can bring myself to write in it). There is very little ghosting. The type is VERY readable and almost seems to pop right off the page. The margins are nice, but not extremely wide. However, they are more than adequate for light note taking.

Because of the better quality paper, I’ve read that the Sovereign is bulkier than the standard Longprimer. I almost shied away from the Sovereign because I was afraid of the extra bulk. But, I’m glad I didn’t. For me, it is the perfect size for reading, studying, or teaching/preaching. Don’t get me wrong: It’s not a small book, but it is manageable. This will be my go-to/all-purpose bible for the foreseeable future.

On a side note, I had my full name embossed on the bible (with 18-Point Font) through the website. It looks fantastic, if embossing is your thing.

As a KJV fan, this is the pinnacle. I can’t see anyone being disappointed with this Bible after you hold it for yourself.

My expectations have certainly been met with the Sovereign. This is my second Allan Bible and I couldn’t be more satisfied.
