Mark Bertrand Review

The ESV Heirloom Single Column Legacy Bible is a special edition of the original ESV Single Column Legacy Bible. Based on the Renaissance ideal of a perfect page, the Single Column Legacy Bible features a simple, clear layout with generous margins.

As with Crossway’s other Heirloom Bibles, the Heirloom Single Column Legacy Bible is printed in the Netherlands on high-quality European Bible paper and features art gilding, three ribbon markers, and an extra-smooth sewn binding. This exclusive edition is available in green, purple, and blue goatskin covers. The Heirloom Single Column Legacy Bible is a fine edition that combines elegant design with the best production materials available.

I had high hopes for this 2021 Bible. I am now still looking for a high quality ESV single column reader because this one is just unpleasant to read. The text block is so jammed together that I would rather read my cheap, trutone hardcover ESV single column Bible! Yes, the leather and paper and guilding are now nice since it is not made in China. Be smart and study those pictures carefully, I was not and I regret it.

I purchased an Ocean Blue Crossway ESV Heirloom Legacy Bible for my wife in January of this year. She has used it daily as a part of her reading plan and has loved it. This Bible is an incredible bargain and is to be highly recommended. It is as nice as other premium Bibles that cost far more money.

This is my absolute favorite bible! In terms of readability I find myself reading the legacy even over the Quentel Because of the single column layout. In terms of craftsmanship this is right up there with the best that R.L. Allan has to offer. The Goatskin is very soft yet durable and think, the blue Goatskin and blue under gold art gilding make this Bible look absolutely stunning. This bible is “the one” for me. If you’re looking for a single column heirloom bible that will last a lifetime this one is it.

My first ESV but, by no means my first premium Bible. After 15+ years in the KJVO movement I’m glad to say I’m free! This is my celebration Bible to myself and I’m very impressed. It’s absolutely beautiful and well constructed. This is by far a thicker leather than many Cambridge Bibles I’ve owned and I personally like it better than highland Goatskin as well. The art gilding is second to none, with perfect precision and skill. With most art gilding you can see the color of dye used underneath the gold foil but, not in this case. It was done perfectly and I can only see the stunning blue art dye when the Bible is open. Probably the best art gilding I’ve seen to date. The text is lined matched and on a very smooth and elegant paper. I’ve had it only an hour and I already now this is going to be my main reading Bible as it is printed very nicely for the optimal reading experience. The margins are great to have as well for notes if anyone is inclined to do so. The size is great for a carry, Church, family reading and even for preaching, although some would disagree on the preaching aspect, I have had issues preaching from text layouts that are extremely similar. I’m going to enjoy this gem of a Bible so, I’d like to thank Evangelical Bible, Crossway and James White for opening my eyes and helping me crawl out of the KJVO movement. May the Lord richly bless,
    Brian

I love this Bible. One of the thing that I noticed is that it’s darker than I anticipated, but that’s not a bad thing at all. I like it. I really, really like it. It’s not quite as dark as navy blue, but it’s definitely darker than royal blue. Another thing that I noticed, and I really like, is that the pages aren’t bright white. They’re not like eggshell or off white, but more like an ivory color. It’s very, very easy on the eyes when you’re reading compared to bright white. I posted a short overview on YouTube if you want to check it out:

This bible was a requested gift for my birthday. I decided on this one after hours of research, questions to Evangelical Bible, and to Mark Bertrand. Evangelical Bible and Mark were incredibly helpful. Here are a few of my thoughts on this bible.

Aesthetically, I love it. The cover is soft and flexible. The rich blue cover and the blue gilded pages are beautiful. I would note the cover appears darker to me than the pictures on the website, which is fine. I like the darker blue. The ribbons are not very wide or long. They work well, but it would be nice if they were at least another inch long.

This bible was purchased for the purpose of being my preaching bible. Up until now, I have used an ESV Thineline with 7.5 point. I wanted a larger bible but one which was still easy to handle. The Legacy does lay flat as advertised. I can open it to Genesis 1 or Revelation 22 and it lies flat on the pulpit. That is a great feature. The weight is not too great to hold with one hand. When open with one hand, the flop is good. I can read the words in the valley and edges easily. The paragraph format allows me to read the passages more smoothly. I am not reading six words then having to jump to the next line of text. The pages are smooth and easy to turn without feeling like you are going to rip them. The line matching is excellent. The pages also do not reflect the light from the overhead lights. Bleed through from other pages is not an issue. As a preaching bible, it is doing everything I wanted it to do.

Here are some critical observations. One of the reasons I bought this bible was the size of the book versus the size of the print. I viewed an ESV Omega Thinline Large print in person. While the words easy to read on that edition, I thought the spacing between the lines made the overall readability difficult. I bought the Legacy sight unseen hoping to bridge that gap. The font is 9 point. I wish it was at least 10. I know they are trying to recreate the ideal page, however I wonder if they could reduce the margins to increase the font? Also, and I don’t know if I can adequately explain this, I am not sure about the font. The words printed are clear and crisp. Yet, the overall readability I find difficult at times. The Psalms and Proverbs read very easy. In the longer prose sections, it seems like the individual lines on the page bleed together. I don’t know if this is because the font they use, the font size, lightening, or my eyes. The paragraph form also makes it harder to find a specific verse. I am sure as I use it more, I will become faster in finding the verses I am looking for.

I am not sure there is a perfectly designed bible that could meet all a person’s wants. I would enjoy comparing this to Alan’s upcoming New Classic Reader. Just not sure I can justify two premium bibles. Overall I am very pleased with the Legacy. I would give it a solid 4 ½ stars.

This is my new favorite Bible. It is so beautiful that, upon seeing it, my brother has decided to order a green one for himself. I can’t say anything new about the Bible itself, but I can note that the staff at Evangelical Bible are the most courteous in the business. I would pay more to deal with them, though it is not needed because they do have excellent prices. I always get a handwritten note thanking me for my business. For that reason, I come here first for anything I need!

I want to add a few more comments that I forgot to mention in my first review. My Bible arrived late yesterday, now I have gotten to read in it. The ESV translation is my favorite. This Bible has the 2016 permanent text. That was also another reason why I ordered it. I was concerned about the font size. As you know from my first review I have 4 Quentels which have a 11 point Milo font. This one has 9 point font. I wear glasses so I don’t have perfect eye site. The spacing and the layout of this incredible Bible lend itself for easy reading. Yes it could be bigger but then it would make the Bible bigger and I love the size as you can see in my first review.
One more thing. God’s word is precious and to have it wrapped around with this beautiful blue goatskin is so worthy. I love this Bible.

I have 4 Schuyler Quentels ( 4 different translations). I love so much about the layout in them. Nothing compares to it and the different colors are amazing.
I wanted another ESV for reading and writing in. I also wanted a smaller size.
With a lot of thought behind it and reading Mark Bertrand’s review on the new Heirloom single column Legacy by Crossway, I decided to order it.
It came today and wow, it is amazing The goatskin reminds me of the extra softness of an Allen Bible. The raised hubs are so cool.
I usually like a double column like the quentel, but the expertise that was put in the making of this single column is wonderful. I love the subtitles in the margins.
I love that Job, Psalms, Proverbs, The Song of Solomon and Isaiah are verse by verse. The blue under gold art guilding is gorgeous. I love seeing the blue when it’s open. The Ocean Blue outside and the inside leather match perfectly.
The Bible lays open flat. There are no cross references . I have my Schuyler Quentel ESV for that!
The room in the margins and bottom of the page is generous. Even though the Bible is as tall and wide as my Quentels , the difference in the thickness makes it seem so much more portable. I thank Crossway for putting this very special and exquisite reading ESV together. I will cherish it for years!
