    :

The Heritage Calfskin is short and beefy but not obese. Indeed, it is difficult to think of a better smaller size reader. The ergonomic Heritage is just a tad longer and thinner than the Cambridge Clarion. For this reviewer that makes it close to ideal in the handheld department. Indeed, she fits the hand quite well and is a pleasure to read lounging or lying in bed.

The single column is also conducive to straight reading. The extensive reference system is lacking, though essential ones are still there (allusions to or quotes from other areas in Scripture). The maps are printed on thicker glossy paper. This is a real plus given that other similar small Bibles from Crossway do not include maps at all.
The Bible’s binding is rather tight. The negative of this is that the Bible will not lay flat in Genesis or Revelation. The positive is that the Heritage could serve as an excellent camping Bible as it is clearly not going to fall apart easily. In any case, the negative is minor considering most will read a Bible of this size in the hand.

The leather is the same smooth calfskin indicative of Crossway models. The Heritage is printed in China. However, as China paper and printing goes it’s pretty nice.

Bottom line: A pleasant little hand held edition.

    :

I have been using this Bible for a month and have been pleasantly surprised at its durability, ease of reading, and comfortability especially when reading in bed at night. It’s the perfect size, and feels as easy as a hefty paperback book. It’s ideal when I travel. It’s not my study Bible (I use my Schuyler) but it’s an enjoyable version. The binding is superb and tight. The paper quality is excellent. Overall this is a quality and handy Bible that’s a perfect fit for your hands.

    (verified owner):

I received the calfskin Heritage yesterday, earlier than promised, and this is a very nice little Bible! The overall size (about 8″ x 5.5″ x 1.25″) is ideal for holding in one hand to read. I’m glad it has regular, narrower margins, as size and weight are much more important to me than extra wasted space in the margins. (Currently there are several wide margin editions offered for those who write in their Bibles.) The calfskin cover is wonderfully thick, soft, and very supple with a beautiful grain. The liner looks like pebble grain leather and is very cleanly finished. After minimal use, this Bible easily lies flat or nearly flat from beginning to end.

This is not a reference Bible, so there are no cross references or concordance, but small footnotes are included. The single column paragraph format is clean and uncluttered with enough white space to be pleasing. There are large chapter numbers and small verse numbers. The poetry sections such as Psalms are in verse format. The 9 pt. type is uniformly dark throughout, but I wish it were bolder for my older eyes–my 11 pt. Schuyler has ruined me, I guess! The leading spacing looks larger than 9 pt., and the text is line matched with better than average ghosting. The Chinese paper looks average to me, and seems thicker than the paper in some Bibles including the Clarion. One small negative may be that at a certain angle under bright direct light, there is a slight sheen which is otherwise not visible, and isn’t as bad as it appears in some on-line photos. Overall, this is an excellent hand size Bible for extended reading.

There are several family record pages behind the presentation page, eight colored maps in the back, and several thick blank pages in front and back. The words of Christ are not printed in red. There are two well-spaced long, narrow, thick, satiny black ribbons. The page edges are gold gilt, with no color under the gold. The spine features slightly raised ridges and gold imprinting. The box states a lifetime guarantee against defects. This is a premium looking Bible at less than premium cost.

I’m very pleased with this Bible. I’d love to see other translations offered in this size and similar format.

As always, Beth and EB’s customer service are tops; thanks and God bless…
