This beautiful edition of the 52 Longprimer is bound in a soft Dark Green Meriva natural grain calfskin with a generous semi-yapp cover, and is leather-lined in navy split calfskin, with gilt line round the inside of the case, and features double-sprayed red under gold art gilt page edges and three eau de nil (light green) ribbon markers with white head and tail bands.

Revised edition includes our distinctive 8pp Presentation Page and Family Record as well as 32pp of navy feint rule Allan notepaper in addition to the dictionary of proper names, subject index, concordance and 16 pages of Oxford Bible maps.

First printed in 1952, the King James Version Longprimer Bible is a sumptuous, traditional reference setting of the Authorized Version. Developed by Oxford University Press and now published exclusively by R. L. Allan, it has for many years been our flagship Bible, renowned the world over for its clarity of type and our beautiful bindings.

Our latest Longprimer printings hark back to a vintage copy of the classic Longprimer, printed in the period 1952-1958 under Charles Batey, then Printer to the University of Oxford, returning to a page image that is much closer to the original intentions of the typesetters. This new-old page image retains the large, clear type of the Longprimer we all know and love, but has a crisper letter form and less of the broken type and ‘spread’ that mark out much-used letterpress typesettings subsequently transferred to film and, only more recently, to digital scans.

Printed on best quality highly opaque 36gsm India Paper * Large, crisp black letter type * 100,000 centre column chain references with dates above * Three light green ribbon markers * Red under gold page edges * 16 pages of full colour Oxford Bible maps * Concordance, subject index and dictionary of proper names * Exclusively available in Allan’s fine leather bindings.

I wanted to do a brief review of this amazing Bible. I had been wanting a ‘Green’ Bible for some time as green was my father’s favorite color and is one of mine. I want to have a nice Bible to remind me of my Dad and the influence his life had (and continues to have) over my life.

I had looked at several different choices over the past several months before deciding on this one. By this point, in my love for ‘Premium Bibles’, I know what I want and don’t want in a Bible. This Allan 52G in Mervia Calfskin is truly everything I do want and nothing that I do not want! The color is a dark Forrest Green Color and the light green accent ribbons are a great asset to the color. The paper is always my first concern for the Bible I use and this paper is among/if not the very best I’ve held. I cannot stop rubbing my hand across the pages as I read! The paper is a nice creamy off-white color that is very appealing to my eyes for reading. The only paper that I like better is in my Allan Brevier Clarendon Wide Margin which has 45 gsm paper. This paper is 36gsm and excellent!

The font size and boldness is perfect for my aging eyes. Of course, I am a traditionalist and the double column layout with center column references is spot on. What I am most impressed about this Bible right out of the box is the feel of the leather. I don’t know that I have held a Bible that felt this good! It is very soft to the touch but not ‘floppy’ when you handle it. It has some structure to it and will be a good ‘Pulpit/Preaching Bible for me. It’s a very smooth leather to the touch and some might be concerned about ‘scratching’ it but it’s not a concern for me. The smell of the Meriva Calfskin is amazing! I always smell it before I read it! Also, the size is just right. I can stick my ‘half-sheet’ sermon notes in comfortably and head off to the ‘Sacred Desk’ and the notes don’t stick out but remain where I tuck them in until I am ready for them. I had read and watched many reviews on this particular Bible and the one that convinced me to go ahead was from ‘A Frish Perspective’ on this Bible. He described this as the ‘perfect Bible’ and went on to describe three or four things that he felt put it in that category. Those things are important to me and I made the purchase. Very, very glad that I did!

I think Allan did a great job on this Bible and I am so glad that I own it. I feel it will bring years of satisfaction and joy and I can highly recommend it for your consideration.

Here’s a link to that review mentioned incase you want to look at it:
Now a word about EVB. I placed the order at 1:55pm with the note “I hope this can go out in todays mailing”. At 2:01pm I got a response that my Bible was on the way with the note “We aim to please”. EVB always gets an A+
