The buffalo leather has a flat blackish finish and it almost looks like a dull plastic, but the grain shows otherwise and the way the leather ripples when bending back the cover proves it’s authenticity. The leather is fairly thin and the stiffness mentioned by Aaron might have more to do with the pastedown on the inside of the cover. As with higher end books the leather along the outside edge is folded over and is nicely stitched all the way around. The crowning jewel on the outside cover is the raised bands on the spine. They are pronounced as on higher end bibles and they convey a degree of quality. They are difficult to see in photos due to the dark color and flat finish of the leather.

I also own the same ESV Large Print Compact Bible but with the Trutone cover, and I will say that the paper quality is much better with the buffalo leather. Also the smyth-sewn binding allows the bible to lay relatively flat compared to the glued binding on the Trutone. Both bible’s have the 8 pt. type which is large enough for me to read without straining my 62 year old eyes.

The buffalo leather bible is not a super premium bible, but it is a good value at $50 and it’s a steal at $35. I’ve started to gift some of these to friends and they are impressed that I would give them $60-$70 bible. Little do they know.

The leather is semi stiff and solid which isn’t a bad thing for a daily carry. I’m used to the feel of a Pitt Minon. The thickness of this one is off putting. The font is larger than a Pitt Minon but seems less clear and harder to read. Sometimes the ghosting is very distracting although line matching is helpful to reduce it when there is a full page of text. It feels durable but time will tell. I personally don’t like the justified text columns since it makes it more difficult to read.
