The exterior of this Bible is a lovely cloth over board that feels like a vintage novel, but the real magic is found inside.

It starts with the Swedish paper. It is uncoated, and the texture is fantastic. On this paper, we have an elegant 12pt font called Trinité, set in a single-column paragraph format. The words are given plenty of room to breath, and when you add that to the lack of chapter or verse numbers, it creates a very open and smooth reading experience. This Bible makes you want to curl up in your favorite chair and read for hours on end.

It would be unfair not to mention L.E.G.O. (Legatoria Editoriale Giovanni Olivotto), the Italian printer who Crossway commissioned to craft the Six-Volume ESV Reader’s Bible. Their work here is truly stunning, and this collection is an absolute treasure for anyone who loves the Bible.

This is the second Bible I’ve purchased from The first was the SCHUYLER QUENTEL ESV. I only mention this because will I compare my impressions of the fonts. But first, my first impression, prior to opening the pages was that this is a high quality mass produced hard bound set of books. The individual supports that the slip case provides each volume is a nice touch, and something I did not expect at this price point. The smythe sewing also is welcome, and appears to be of high quality.

My first impression upon opening a volume was, “this is a really nice paper.” The weight, color and feel are incredible. My second impression was, “this is a tiny, ugly font ( ok, ugly may be too strong of a word, but the font is not attractive)” The leading and use of white space is very nice, but the font, which is suppose to be a “large” font, as far as Bibles go, looks small, and it is not a very attractive, nor easy on the eyes for prolonged reading, which is the purpose of this type of Bible. The reason I mentioned the SCHUYLER QUENTEL ESV is that it uses a slightly smaller font, but its font appears bigger, is much more attractive and is easier to read.

I have read some reviews that mention the ability to write on this fine paper. The paper would take writing very well, without bleed through with most pens. But why? Why would you take a Bible who’s primary attraction is the removal of all footnotes, all cross references, all chapter and verse numbers, creating a clean, unencumbered reading experience with nothing to stop, or even slow down the reading of scripture, and then clutter it with underlines, highlights, notes, and heaven forbid poorly drawn art? This Bible was designed to be crisp and clean, and should remain that way.

Keep or return? While the font is a disappointment, for $100 it’s not a deal breaker. If I had spent the $200 retail price or purchased leather, it would have been enough to return the Bible, but for $100 I will keep and enjoy this Bible for years to come. They are incredible. I placed the order on a Friday, was notified within 2 hours that the Bible had shipped with an anticipated delivery date of the following Friday, but on Monday, following the order placement, the Bible arrived.

Exceeded my expectations. The paper is very good without any ghosting. The size of each book is just right for reading. Even the storage case has slots in the bottom so as to make it easier to insert the book back into it. Well done Crossways!!

I received the six volume cloth covered ESV reader’s bible for Christmas from my wife (after a not-so-subtle hint, okay, I outright asked and gave her the info). She said she was amazed at how fast it arrived. No damage due to great packaging. The craftsmanship is impeccable. The perfect size, perfect typeface, perfect paper, and wonderful translation. I’m enjoying reading without my mind getting sidetracked by chasing curiosity rabbits in footnotes, cross-references, and etc. There is a place for that as I study and prepare sermons. With the reader’s version, those temptations are removed and I find myself focusing on the substance at length and getting caught up in the grand sweep page after page and not segmenting my thoughts at the beginning and end of each chapter change. The value and quality far exceeds the price. To me, this set is perfect in every way. I’m certain it will be well used over the years and will stand up well to that usage. If anyone is hesitating about buying this, don’t. You’ll be glad you purchased it. It’s great!

I love God’s word. I discovered the ESV 6 years ago when I began going to a Reformed/Gospel centered church. I also discovered Crossway bibles. And since have 4 of them in various settings.
When I was notified about this set, I could not contain my enthusiasm for a bible that was just God’s word, and nothing else. Call me ADD, but I found other bibles distracting when I just wanted to read because of the amount of added information, which is a strength for those formats.
I, at times just wanted to concentrate on the word, unhindered, and this was an answer for my longing.
The Clothbound edition is an absolutely wonderful wrapping for Scripture. Although nothing by man will ever be perfect, I can say care was taken with these volumes.
They are the “right size”, and are a pleasure to hold. The font is easy on the eyes, even for someone who should be reading with glasses. It is legible, and flows very well. They are put together very well.
They were packaged for shipping with great care. When I received my package, the corners of the box were damaged, and I thought that the books were also, but they were not. (As others have been. It seems that any box that I have been getting lately is damaged in some way, when anything mentioning “Christian” is on the shipping label)
There was the shipping box, and inside of that was the package protection cardboard wrap, then inside that, like a long-awaited present, beautiful wrapping paper, and finally, the set itself. It was a nice moment to have, after waiting for a few months. Joy would describe it accurately.
I have seen some reviews for this set, and the leather that were just a little inconsiderate of the care and dedication that went into the design and production. One person had the arrogance to complain about the crease on the ribbon markers. I assume that he has never bought a bible with ribbon markers. (Alas, they are the brethren.)
Every one that I have that has a ribbon (over ten) was folded into the pages, and therefore had a crease, but, over time, relaxed. But, if it is really that much of a deal breaker, warm up an iron.
    In Christ, Mark

In the past, I have bought copies of The Gospels and The Reader’s Bible by Crossway. I prefer the cloth over board feel for my books and ordered the Reader’s Set as such. The cloth and board seem heavier than previous editions mentioned, and they open nicely, even though new.

Packaging was excellent, so not to get damaged in shipping. Very happy with my purchase. If you unfamiliar with the ESV Reader’s Bible format, the verse markings and footnotes have been removed, leaving a very clean text for reading. It provides a relaxed, easy to read format, in my opinion. I highly recommend this set and the cloth over board format will not disappoint.
