First, the positives: as far as Bibles go, this one is gorgeous; I absolutely love its aesthetics. It’s very elegant, not at all overdone. I will note that the pattern contains a hint of more yellow than appears in the listing photo, and the leather binding is definitely a bit darker than appears above. (Frankly, I think the darker leather adds to the refinement of the design.)

The lines in the outer margin for one’s notes are 1 and 5/8″ wide, not the 2″ noted in the listing. It doesn’t sound like much, but it provides so much more room for one’s personal notes than does a standard Bible. The printed lines are faint, so while they’ll help you keep your notes straight and clean, they are not so dark that they’ll interfere with the ability to read what you’ve written.

The negatives: it REALLY bothers me that this Bible contains such scanty notes and cross references at the bottom of its pages. I’d be positively over the moon about this Bible if it were both a journaling Bible AND a study Bible. I do understand that Crossway was attempting to limit the dimensions and weight of the Bible. Still, this Bible is smaller than most, and I’d definitely prefer a larger Bible so that the amount of notes and cross references could be increased. Another reason that I’d gladly carry a larger, heavier Bible: for a larger font. This listing indicates it is 7.5 point font; other sites state that it is 7 point font; whatever it is, it’s pretty diminutive! I compared the size of the typeface with other Bibles I own, and found that this Bible’s primary font is comparable to the size of cross-references in other Bibles! Fortunately, Crossway partially mitigated this problem by selecting a darker and heavier black typeface than those one commonly sees in Bibles; this does make it easier to read than it would otherwise be.

All things considered, the positive aspects of this Bible outweigh its negatives. I would certainly purchase this Bible again, and I’d feel comfortable recommending it to others, with a caveat regarding the limited notes and cross references.
