Description

Enjoy the New King James Version published in this beautiful verse-by-verse, two-color setting. An extensive set of cross references and translator notes makes this a classic you’ll enjoy reading for years to come.

About the Book

The elegant Bible you’ll keep coming back to because it’s so easy to read and use.

Enjoy the beautiful New King James Version in a traditional Scripture design optimized to help you quickly navigate through the Bible. The 2-column text employs a verse-by-verse—or verse-style—setting, which means that each verse starts on its own line, making them a snap to find. The large print text is easy to read, and the blue headings and verse numbers stand out while providing a restful, thoroughly enjoyable Scripture-reading experience. With over 72,000 cross references and the complete set of NKJV translator notes, this Bible gives you the tools you’ll need to dive deeply into God’s Word for yourself.

Features include:

  • VERSE-BY-VERSE LAYOUT – Each verse starts on its own line, so it’s easy to navigate the text
  • PREMIUM BIBLE PAPER – The opaque white paper creates a high contrast with the black text, improving readability
  • ULTRA-FLEXIBLE LAY-FLAT SEWN BINDING – Durably constructed book binding allows the Bible to lay flat wherever you are reading
  • END-OF-PAGE CROSS REFERENCES – Find related passages quickly and easily
  • WIDE DOUBLE-FACED SATIN RIBBONS – Keep track of where you were reading
  • FULL-COLOR MAPS – Have a visual representation of Israel and other biblical locations for better context
  • Clear and readable 10.5-point NKJV Comfort Print

Trusted by millions of believers around the world, the NKJV remains a bestselling modern “word-for-word” translation. It balances the literary beauty and familiarity of the King James tradition with an extraordinary commitment to preserving the grammar and structure of the underlying biblical languages. And while the translator’s relied on the traditional Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic text used by the translators of the 1611 KJV, the comprehensive translator notes offer important insights about the latest developments in biblical manuscript studies. The result is a Bible translation that is both beautiful and uncompromising—perfect for serious study, devotional use, and reading aloud.

  1. Z.

I bought this black goatskin MacLaren Bible directly from the publisher because it was out of stock here at the time. It was a big mistake because I had to go through an exchange process with them and their customer service is simply awful. It took over a month and a half to complete the process. I should have waited for new stock on Evangelical Bible instead.

From a content perspective I consider this NKJV edition nearly perfect.
    Text block pros:
    – Unabridged translators’ preface. It’s important to understand their philosophy and textual basis.
    – Full set of translator notes.
    – Full set of cross-references.
    – Book abbreviations and special Abbreviations pages included. Since the NKJV translator notes can be quite cryptic, this is an absolute must. How else would you know what Bg., Kt., Qr., NU, M stand for in the notes?
    – Minimalist presentation page and no pages for family records. Use your Bible for actual reading. You can always do your genealogy online.
    – No concordance or any other study tools. You only get the Bible text which is great.
    – 7 maps by Zondervan (printed on shiny card stock unfortunately)

    Text block cons:
    – The Comfort Print did away with the oblique type for Old Testament quotes. Now the typeface doesn’t mark quotes in any way. It’s a regression if you ask me. Other translations often use small caps or bold fonts for quotes. The translators felt that put too much emphasis on O.T quotes so they thought the oblique type was a good choice. Italic is still used to mark translator-added words.
    – The verse-by-verse prose layout doesn’t have any paragraph markers. Only the poetic sections show paragraphs. Traditionally, bold verse numbers or pilcrows would help the reader identify paragraphs. Skipping these is a design mistake in my opinion. If you don’t think paragraph information is useful, why retain it in the poetic sections then?

Since all other Thomas Nelson NKJV editions either trim the preface, skip the special abbreviations page, include reduce sets of translator notes or cross-references, I consider this edition the most complete and wholesome NKJV publication currently.

    Paper and binding
    Pros:
    – The black goatskin cover is a nice upgrade. I returned the brown genuine leather version that I ordered originally because it felt cheap with the paste-down paper liner.
    – The 36 gsm paper has good opacity and is easy to turn. It’s not as nice to the touch as French milled paper used by Cambridge and Schuyler but the thickness really helps with page turns.
    – The art gilding is really nice. I like the salmon color under gold. The gold looks especially think and well done.
    – The blue subject headings, chapter, verse and reference markers really help with navigating.
    – Black letter text. For various reasons, I don’t like red-letter Bibles.
    – The Smyth-sewn, edge-lined construction is well done. It also features overcast stitching to reinforce the first signature.
    – The perimeter stitching and stamped gilt line add to the overall quality.
    – Overall, this Maclaren is almost at the same quality level as the Premier Collection.
    Cons:
    – The synthetic liner is what keeps the price of this edition down. For longevity, you really want a leather liner but that would come at a considerable premium.
    – The Maclaren used to be the Preaching Bible series. It has a 10.5 font size which makes this a large Bible. Now that it is positioned as a verse-by-verse reference Bible, I’d like to see a 9-point version of this same text block which would reduce the overall bulk.

I can compare to Allen and Cambridge bibles. My Maclaren NKJV is not leather covered however the leatherlike cover is exceptional; flexible like leather is and has a texture like a quality leather cover. Print size is great for me (8.5 is too small). Page layout is very nice and invites comfortable reading. The quality of construction is very good. Although the paper is nice, to be fair, it is not as nice to the touch as Allen, or Cambridge. The texture of the paper, however, is a bit flat and does not reflect light as a more shiny paper does. At first I did not like the references located at the bottom of the page, however after much use I prefer them there because they are not a distraction while reading the text.

I have purchased too many premium Bibles over the years, and can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that I was blown away by this Bible. I preach every Sunday and was impressed by the overall layout and comfort print typeface.

I highly recommend. One suggestion for later editions of this Bible, though, is a bit wider margins.

    Overall, an amazing preaching Bible!
