I purchased this Bible a few months back, 10 months actually and let me tell you, it goes everywhere I go and is breaking in so beautiful that the calfskin has me wanting to possibly get the same in the RSV with apocrypha. It breaks in better than the goatskin. Time will tell which I purchase. Glory to God for this most perfect copy of his word.

I have been disappointed with my purchase of the mahogany calfskin Bible. After only a few months of using it, it has multiple scratches on the front and looks bad. I only take it to church and am careful with my Bible. When I emailed the company for a recommendation on how to care for the Bible and make the scratches look better, they only said they don’t recommend any oils or lotions and that I should use a carrying case. This Bible also doesn’t have much marbeling as the other reviewers have noted. It is clear that this is a high quality Bible as far as the paper, stitching, etc but I would not recommend it for durability.

This is a fantastic, top quality Bible. I own a couple of goatskin Bibles from Cambridge, and like others, I was hesitant at first to buy calfskin instead of goatskin. Also like the others, my trepidation was blown away by the quality of the leather. It is so soft and supple with a beautiful grain. The brown is deep and dark on my bible and the marbling is done very well. Whereas the black goatskin Bibles I have evoke the sense of a very high quality classic Bible cover, this is more akin to the kind of leather that might be sold at a store with the words “Fine Leather Goods” mounted above the door. An advantage of the calfskin (comparing again to the Cambridge Bibles) is that the Gold stamping on the spine is much sharper than on goatskin. The Jerusalem cross on the front cover is the perfect example of the kind of simple design choice that brings just the right touch of class in my opinion. Not to mention that the smell of the leather is marvelous.

The Quentel is known for its readability, and for me the format is unmatched, especially because I love a two column format and cross references. I am a black-letter text kind of guy, but I also absolutely love a little bit of color splashed into a Bible. The red accents in the chapter numbers, page numbers, and cross references accomplish this perfectly, and are well suited to the red art gilding and mahogany cover (this is why I didn’t go for an imperial blue, although I know that edition is loved by others). The paper is opaque and the line matching is very consistent (other bibles I’ve seen have not been as consistent in their line matching).

A few minor things: The cover is beautiful, and I intend to care for it well, although I worry slightly that the soft calfskin may scuff a little easier than a goatskin would. This is my first leather, edge-lined bible and I am slowly breaking in the tabs so that the bible may lay flatter in the very front and back (although it is doing a pretty good job already). I would have liked a concordance at the expense of a slightly thicker Bible, although I suspect the omission of a concordance has more to do with font size than the thickness of the block. If you look at the concordance of a regular sized Quentel you will see the font size is significantly smaller than the main text, and shrunk to this size it may well become unusable. Finally, I personally don’t like the inclusion of lined paper. Although I love a beautiful physical Bible like this, I do most of my in-depth study in my Bible Software and keep those notes there. I keep sermon and devotional notes in a separate notebook. I don’t like to be influenced by my previous thoughts and underlines when reading the Word unless I am intentionally going back in a notebook to find them. However, the lined paper in this Bible seems to glare at me, judging me for not using it despite the fact that I would rather not sully a Bible of this quality with my chicken scratch. Maybe someday I will find someone with immaculate handwriting willing to write a few creeds and maybe some of the liturgy from my church in the back.

To end this long review, this is an absolute fantastic Bible! The quality, size, and readability make this the perfect Bible for me. Don’t let the price scare you, I would rather spend this much on a quality Bible that I can pass down to my children rather than buy several more true tone covers I have had in the past that disintegrate into nothing. This Bible draws me to the Word every day. May it continue to shape me and bless all that read it.

After purchasing the PSQ personal size in mahogany calfskin, this is the best Bible I’ve ever had. It is truly of the finest craftsmanship and it is apparent that everyone involved took the utmost care in the production of this Bible. The 2k Denmark formatting as well as the paper quality is perhaps the most impressive to me.

The amazing thing they’ve done is they have made double column formatting look beautiful for poetry, which I never saw before. This has made the PSQ stand out as personal size is there while having a aesthetically pleasing type set.

If you’re up in the air, this Bible is a 100% go for it. I wasn’t paid anything to give this review, and bought this Bible full-price. I think you should to. Support the work of expert craftsmanship.

  5. Kristina

This Bible is GORGEOUS! I love that the calfskin has so many different textures, my kids can’t stop feeling it. I prefer this cover over my purple Quentel hands down. I have small hands and this fits perfectly into one hand to read so it will be a great one to take to church each week. I’m not sure why I haven’t purchased a PSQ before but I’m so glad that I did. Also, in case you were wondering, it smells fantastic too!

  6. Tyler H.

Just like my other Schuyler Bibles this one is extremely good quality! This is my first calfskin Bible and I really do like it (almost better than my goatskin) but they both have their place in my heart! Everything about this Bible is excellent quality and completely worth the price, I recommend these to everyone! If you take care of this Bible it will last you a lifetime!

  7. Mike B.

This is a really top-shelf bible. The calfskin cover is very nice. Note that the picture shows 3 ribbons while the description says 2. My bible came with two. I have a Chant bound Allan and a couple of other high end bibles. This one is at least as good in the binding department and the text block is a significant upgrade to my Allan. It’s compact and still readable.

  8. Chris Lueken

I have many Schulyers and they are all amazing Bibles. The level of quality is over all other Bibles I have been in contact with. The reason I am giving this purchase a 4-star is because of the “mahogany” effect. It does not even come close to matching the picture. It looks like they rubbed black on the brown calfskin and wiped off some of it. It is similar to the “antiqued” goatskin, but there is alot more black than brown. It is still rich in color and attractive to look at, but I can’t call this a “mahogany” calfskin. I got it as a gift for my daughter and she is very pleased with it.

As owner of a couple different Schuylers, and reading several of the great reviews, I was excited to order this PSQ and see what the fuss was all about. After receiving this, I am more than happy to say that the accolades are well deserved, and I am adding my 5 star rating to this bible. As always…Evangelical Bible is top notch in the ordering process, the communication and professionalism! Very fast shipping is always appreciated.
I must confess, I was a little apprehensive about ordering this PSQ because of the font size. My eyes are not bad, but I’m also not 18 anymore. I was very pleased to see that the font size was NOT an issue once I opened it up and started to peruse through a few books. I absolutely love the marbled mahogany calfskin, and it is much softer than I imagined it would be. The red under gold gilding is a remarkable accent to the mahogany color, and the Smythe stitching and perimeter stitching are well done, and seem durable. I am not a big fan of ribbons, but there are 2 nicely made, gold ribbons that are well placed. I like the fact that there are several blank, thick pages in the back for additional notes. The maps are a very nice feature and Schuyler uses a paper that is not glossy for the maps. Glossy maps can be a distraction in churches or other places that use very bright lights.
Overall, I am highly impressed and pleased with this purchase from EB, and I can see that this PSQ will become an everyday carry for me.
I definitely recommend this PSQ ESV !!

I bought this mahogany calfskin because the antique marble brown goatskin edition is currently out of stock and you know what? I’m glad I did. I was not fond of a Schuyler calfskin I had owned previously but the mahogany calfskin is a marked improvement. It is softer, more flexible, and the color goes so well with the art gilt pages. And its more durable construction is the whole reason I was originally going to buy the goatskin edition so this one is a “win” all around.

  11. David S.

I have purchased the ESV PSQ Bible before. the Bible is a thing of beauty, both inside and out. The font size is perfect for older eyes and yet not too big for younger ones. The craftsmanship of the Bible is probably the best out there in the line of high end Bibles. The size of the Bible allows for daily reading, personal (ongoing) study, preaching, traveling, etc. The PSQ is really an all around high quality Bible and well worth the investment.

I love this Bible! I usually like to have a goatskin cover, but when I saw this one the color combination between the marbled mahogany and the red with gold art gilt edges, I decided to take the chance on the calfskin cover… and I am so glad I did! The leather in person is just as gorgeous as the goatskin, although slicker, smoother grain (so just depends on preference; I love both the goatskin and this new calfskin that is made just like Schuyler’s goatskin Bibles). An absolutely gorgeous Bible and I love reading God’s Word from it.

  13. Barbara Saunders

Beautiful Bible and journal. I am more than thrilled with these.

  14. fornosfr

Just received mine. The Marbled Mahogany Calfskin with gold art gilt and ribbons is to me one of the most beautiful color combinations currently being offered by EvangelicalBible. The quality of the calfskin leather and entire craftsmanship is superb, to say the least and it’s extremely comfortable to hold.
The font size is perfect and line spacing and matching makes reading a delight. Having the references at the bottom instead of a center/margin column also adds to the ease of readability; always a plus.
This PSQ also has one of the best colored and detailed maps I’ve seen. I couldn’t be happier with the purchase.
Would gladly make a second purchase of this PSQ ESV Marbled Mahogany Calfskin if Schuyler ever releases a reader’s version without chapter/verse numbers.

  15. ann mcmahon

The new full calfskin cover is superb! Soft and supple , yet not too floppy making this PSQ easy to hold in hand. I hope Schuyler makes full calfskin covers available on all translation levels as it is the best fit between the calf paste down and a goatskin. The antique mahogany calfskin is beautiful!

  16. Tim

In reference to the earlier review, meant to use “PSQ” not “PSR”… it is a wonderful Bible!!!

  17. Tim

Schuyler makes a fine Bible. I appreciate the PSR series, having the NASB already. The color and texture of this calfskin edition is absolutely beautiful! Hopefully Schuyler will be offering this in the other versions as well. Would like to see a verse by verse format (as in the Canterbury KJV PSR) in all the PSR Editions as well as some yapp too! The calfskin edge lined in this edition again is a nice edition and the color, probably the most unique and nicest color yet! And always a big shout out to Evangelicalbible for their impeccable customer service and care, always appreciative of them! Blessings!!!
