Description

The Revised Standard Version (RSV) is a revision of the American Revised Version (1901) which was itself a revision of the King James Version (1611). The RSV was translated by 32 scholars along with 50 representatives of cooperating denominational bodies. The translation committee attempted to stay as close as possible to its rich Tyndale-King James heritage. “We have resisted the temptation to use phrases that are merely current usage, and have sought to put the message of the Bible in simple, enduring words that are worthy to stand in the great Tyndale-King James tradition.

I have loved the RSV as a translation for many years and have used as a supplementary translation while using its offspring—the NRSV and ESV— and its cousins— the NKJV and NASB ’95— as my primary bibles off and on over the last 30 years, even though I have preferred the RSV over them all. I have bought many used copies of the RSV over the years and most recently have been using a paperback copy to mark up and study with. But now, I can thank the Lord for Schuyler Bibles for making the finest bible I have ever owned and making it in the RSV translation. I own the Marbled Mahogany and Black Goatskin w/o Apocrypha and think it is the finest bible Schuyler has made (and I STILL love my NKJV Quentel, NASB Credo Quentels, and my ESV PSQs). The two-column layout of the Schuyler RSV is in a clear and readable font on the best feeling paper I have come across in a Bible. Both the calfskin and goatskin leather is magnificent to touch. These editions of the RSV are slender without being too skinny, and feel light as air while carrying. Thank you Schuyler for bringing this important translation back to life in editions that will last for lifetimes and be used as heirlooms. I am so happy I can now carry my favorite translation to church and use for study, mediation, and no longer have to use the RSV as a secondary/supplementary scripture translation. I have found THE ONE. Thank you Schulyler!

Just received my Mahogany RSV and it is wonderful. Feels so soft like butter in my hands. While there is a typo in the book of Sirach in the introductory paragraph it does not matter WHATSOEVER! keeping it and fully loving it. I highly recommend getting the Old RSV as soon as possible.

Outstanding; easily the best edition of the RSV ever published. If, like me, you’re one of the few people who prefer the RSV as their primary translation, this is a must have.

I pre-ordered this Bible hoping it would become the family Bible for my wife and I. (We were married a few months ago.) It has met and exceeded all of my expectations.

The marbled mahogany calfskin is beautiful, supple, and smelled amazing out of the box. It feels good in the hand.
The red/gilt edged pages are handsome.
The Bible is on the larger side – which means the font is a very comfortable size. It is easy for my wife to read with her poor vision. For me, it is a delight to sit and read for extended stretches. (The typeset chosen is easy to scan with the eyes – and the decorative chapter breaks are a real treat.) It’s not so large that it cannot be read while someone holds it in their hand.
It lays flat comfortably on a desk or table – even at the very beginning of Genesis or the very end of Revelation.
(If you want to know what it looks like, there are many reviews of the very-similar Schuyler Quentel ESV floating around the Internet.)

This translation in particular is ideal for us to use as a family Bible. It retains much of the poetic ‘Bible English’ of the King James (‘behold’, ‘lo’, ‘it came to pass’, etc.) while reserving the use of thee/thou language for humans addressing God. It allows the reader to become familiar with the Bible text that molded the English language for 350+ years without being excessively antiquated. It is ideal for reading Luke 2 at Christmas and for use at Morning or Evening Prayer according to the Book of Common Prayer.

Unlike more modern translations, this text is fixed and not subject to being periodically revised, making it a good choice for a Bible that will last a lifetime, like this one. It’s also one with a wide appeal: Catholics, Orthodox, and mainline Protestants all use it; Reformed evangelicals are used to the ESV (which is ~86% identical to it); and many Christians of color appreciate it as a light update of the King James Version.

It could not be more pleased with my purchase!
