Monasterio de San Isidoro del Campo near Sevilla Spain. Place where first Bible in Spanish was translated. Most people (in the USA and Spain) have never heard of Casiodoro de Reina. Did you know his Bible translation in 1569 (later to become the Reina y Valera) was the first complete Bible translated into Spanish? Did you know there is no other book in the Spanish language that comes any where near the publishing numbers of this Bible (100s of millions of copies)? Miguel de Cervantes (Don Quixote) comes no where near these numbers. Reina was a monk (sound familiar) in the Jerome order that was swept up in the spirit of the Reformation. Reina escaped from Spain by the “skin of his teeth” (thanks to Tyndale for that expression) - but many of his fellow monks did not escape the Inquisition that was in full force. Reina’s first copies were therefore printed in Basel Switzerland. Bible translation was an amazing revolutionary act that often resulted in death!
