I love this leather. The Saddle Brown is deliciously fragrant. Some leathers are ultra-processed and have a lingering chemical odor. Not so here. Just richness and depth.

The stitching on my copy is perfection. I’ve ordered other Schuyler bibles with shoddy corner work and overtly crooked perimeter stitching. Again, not so here. Also, the red liner and ribbons offer the perfect classic pairing.

At first I was concerned about accidentally scratching the sensitive aniline leather or even holding it with my clammy hands and making perspiration handprints. But now that I’ve owned this Bible for a couple of weeks I am less worried. Yes, the leather does indeed easily show scuffs, etc. In fact, if you examine the leather closely you can observe the many open pores. But I just love this Bible so much that I’m no longer willing to baby it. I did buy a Harris Tweed cover for it from Sarah Jayne Designs on Etsy and I’d highly recommend you do the same if you want to transport this Bible with you to work/school/church. She offers hearty, elegant, and timeless protection for all bibles but aniline calfskin stands to benefit the most with how vulnerable it is.

I’d like to also comment on the interior of this bible. The drop caps Schuyler has created for the NLT are gorgeous. Contemporary and simple but also beautiful and elegant. I really really very much appreciate that there aren’t any letters or numbers in the text to direct to footnotes. I find those so distracting in other translations Schuyler has licensed such as the NIV. The footnotes are still here but the reader chooses if/when to check them. I love that they are less intrusive and more optional. I’d like other translations to undergo this treatment although I also know the PSQ in those versions would also likely increase in size as the NLT and ESV PSQ have. I like the older smaller PSQ but the textual differences like drop caps and streamlined reading would make it worth it.

I appreciate the concordance and lined notebook paper. I like red letter text for the words of Jesus but this is just a black letter Bible. I don’t mind at all in this case.

Three general critiques: please go back to spelling out New Living Translation on the spine. NLT looks cheap to me. NIV also. Secondly, please offer more standard yapp options. Not everyone likes full yapp. Lastly, please go back to offering more goatskin options. Calfskin is cool and quite novel, but goatskin is rich and classic. Please bring back more standard yapp red/blue/purple/green goatskin options for all translations and product lines.
