I have a Schuyler PSC and really like it a lot but I wanted a more classic vintage Bible and picked this. I am very pleased with the choice. The text does fade in some places but it is always very readable and I feel that the fading just adds to the vintage look of this Bible. This is an amazing Bible and of top quality. Lots of resources in the concordance.
    God bless

I’m not sure that my brother’s and sister’s know what this little treasure is. Regardless of translation preference? It has line charts on lineage, cyclopedia, spreadsheet timelines, and colored maps. The effort to preserve aged this text was also extraordinary. It is a full yap goat skin Bible printed on some of the best paper in the world from RJ Allan…

Beautiful Bible, and better than what I was expecting for the price.

This is a beautiful compact Bible. The font is quite readable, though the cross-references are bit small for half-century-old eyes. A small magnifier is helpful. The size is comfortable to hold and read almost anywhere. It fits in a small tablet case perfectly, which, being padded, offers great protection for the Bible.

This is my new favorite hand-sized bible. I wrote a review in which I gave the Cambridge Cameo 5 stars. That review still stands.

But man is the Blackface great. Cover is much better than the Cameo. I like the typesetting better than the Personal Size Canterbury. I was amazed at the difference the thicker paper in the Blackface can feel compared to the Clarendon. The yapp is just perfect. Cyclopedic reference is a big plus for me. Also, the text is smaller than all three but it is eminently readable to me. This bible checks all of my boxes. Though I own all four of these bibles, I come back to this the most often and will usually alternate with the Cameo.

    The Blackface vs. the Clarendon

The Brevier Blackface is my FAVORITE of all portable Bibles! I also have a couple of Allan 7c’s Brevier Clarendon Bibles and they too are wonderful Bibles! The Blackface is just such a classic Bible. When you purchase a Blackface you are getting a piece of history. A timeless superbly readable vs. by vs layout that befits the regal KJV. The text is a little smaller than the Clarendon at 8 point vs 9 point, but the spacing of the letters, lines and words make it just “flow” a tiny bit better to me.

Also, the paper on the Blackface is a little thicker at 28 gsm vs. 22 gsm on the Clarendon. I like that little bit of extra thickness in the paper though truly the paper on the Clarendon is great too. I have marked both Bibles with Mr. Pen gel highlighters with no bleed through on either.

Another wonderful feature of the Blackface is the self pronouncing text. I think it is useful and also looks neat. This is a difference with the Clarendon which does not have it so if it’s important to you one way or another take that into account.

I have some people say that there is some inconsistency in the darkness of print and I have found a little of that in my Blackface Bibles but never so much that there is ANY drop off in readability to me. In fact it is hard for me to notice it much at all but that may just be me. I enquired of EB about this before I bought and was informed that that is kinda just part of the package you get with a classic Bible like this. The print was scanned from hot letter plates of yesteryear and there is natural difference in some of the plates from use. At any rate, I find it slightly noticeable and not at all a problem for actual reading and enjoyment of God’s Word found in this beautiful little Bible.

I hope this review has been helpful. I HIGHLY recommend both this quality Bible and the Clarendon too. Buy them both, but if you have to choose and you like the self pronouncing text (or even if you are indifferent to it) the Blackface is a great choice.

We are so lucky to have God’s Word available to us in so many wonderful Bibles today. Bibles that will last to give to our kids someday and perhaps their kids as well.

As always, Evangelical Bibles’ service and knowledge about their product is exemplary!

Nice bible for the money. I own a couple of Allan’s and schuylers and well pleased with the quality in both company’s. Only complaint on this brevier blackface is fading in some places of the text. May just be from such a vintage oxford typesetting. It wasn’t bad enough to send back. A font size bigger and no cyclopedic concordance would be perfect for me but I still love bible. I looked at the clarendon 7 with no concordance but didnt like 22 GSM paper compared to blackface 28 GSM. Just a preference I guess. Allan has me won over with the full yapp goatskin covers. Absolutely gorgeous!

I wanted to update my review. I’ve had this bible for a few weeks now and it has become my favorite bible to read. The size is perfect and the feel of the goatskin leather is awesome. There is some inconsistency in the darkness of the ink and some letters are faded or smudged, but overall the Bible is awesome. I also have a Schuyler classic reference and a Canterbury, but this is my go to bible for daily reading.

This bible is the perfect size for travel and has a very nice goatskin cover but the uneven and fading print are a shame. It’s not what you would expect from an Allan bible. This was my first Allan and probably my last. I’ll stick with Schuyler.

Its great little book I love it

This bible is not the one in the picture. I bought this bible to not have the gold guild line in the inside of the cover. However this bible has it inside, and I was very disappointed with that, considering that was the main reason why I bought it. The leather yapp is a full not a substantial yapp. The paper is way better than others. Very well made bible. Just don’t like the fact that the bible is not the one in the picture.

  12. Todd Bibler (verified owner)

The leather is excellent but the bible does not lay flat. I have a Cambridge one and it layed flat on the very first opening of the bible. A little disappointed.

My copy is anything but “bold”. There is some fading and uneven print. Not sure if my copy is atypical but it’s not what I expected from Allan. seems to be a lower quality paper as well. I paid a lot of money for a very nice cover I guess. And by the way, like Brian said, this cover is nice. Not sure if I’m returning this one or not. I will stick with Schuyler from now on.

This one has really caused me to rethink my opinion on natural goatskin. I’ll absolutely love this Bible and it has become my everywhere Bible (street work/ministry). I’d like to thank the genius who chose Calfsplit for the liner of this absolutely well built Bible. As a street preacher I really appreciate the yapp and they are conservative when they “substantial yapp” as it is full on the top and bottom and just a smidgen away from a full Yapp. Back to the shell. The goatskin is rugged yet soft which makes for a very durable Bible. I have yet to see a scratch on the cover because of the leather chosen. Now for the calfsplit leather liner, it being calfsplit has definitely become more and more flexible in the short time I’ve had it along with the outer shell natural goatskin. To be honest I really think the natural goatskin is in some ways just as good as the Highland Goatskin and for some purposes better. Keep up the great work Allan and Sons and thano you Evagelical Bible!

The perfect travel Bible for those who’s eyes are just a tad weak for the Ruby! It is the typical Allan quality with Goatskin leather, and no-bleed through pages, with the Bible laying open flat, at any page. Nice touches with ribbons, stitching, and maps, but it is the beautiful leather and distinct legibility of print that makes this a great addition for every day carry, or portable use.
