1 review for Schuyler Personal Size Quentel ESV, Tuscany Calfskin Bible

The new ESV PSQ is, in my opinion, very nearly the perfect Bible. The quality of craftsmanship is just what one would expect from Schuyler. The font is bolder and darker making it easier to read than the old version, perhaps even easier for my eyes than the old full size Quentel. I love the appearance of the typesetting with the ornate drop caps and chapter numbering. Even the appearance of the cross references at the bottom of the page seems nicer. The dimensions of the book are very similar to a Cambridge Concord, which I’ve long thought of as the perfect size for a Bible.
My only gripe is about the cross references. The superscript letters in the text only serve to mark a reference to a textual footnote, e.g. the ESV’s ubiquitous “or brothers and sisters.” There is nothing in the text to point the reader to the abundant cross references which, like the previous version, are at the bottom of the page. This makes it difficult to know when a cross reference is present and to which part of the verse the reference points. This has been one of my only complaints about the Concord, which has no references in the text either but at least places the references in the center column next to the associated verse. Had Schuyler placed the references in the center column and left the cross references in the text, the new PSQ might be very nearly perfect for me.
This new edition makes for an excellent reader, maybe the best I have in ESV, but I wouldn’t recommend it as a reference edition. The cross reference suite occupies a lot of page space but is just not as useful as it could be. All that said, I am very happy with mine and will be using this beautiful edition daily!
