1 review for Crossway ESV Study Bible, Large Print (TruTone®, Mahogany, Trellis Design)
Frank L Parker –
I can’t believe I have not reviewed this Bible. There is no reason for the regular 9pt font(?) single 4.5 inch, eighty character per line edition, when this Bible is offered with 11pt font, in the main double column body of text with much larger font for the notes as well. Crossway says the notes font in the original is 7.5, but that would make the Large Print note size at least an 8.5 or a finely printed 9. I have a hard time looking at the original’s text and seeing it as a solid 9, the difference is so marked between the two editions. The column width in the Large Print is 2 5/8ths inches wide with only 39-40 characters and spaces per line. It is very comfortable to read. It can be speed read with ease, if you do that in a study Bible. The paper is the same 29.5 gsm Thincoat Plus Finnish Tervakoski for both, and the typefaces are the same for both although much larger in the large print. The ghosting is almost by definition the same for both, which is to say not really a lot, very good considering neither is line matched. But the ghosting in the large print SEEMS less because the words are so much more distinct and the spacing so much more generous. You see the words, not the ghosts of words.
No leather cover was offered for the large print edition when I bought mine, and while the TruTone is not leather, it’s adequate, just not as nice. And the Large Print won’t be offered in the goatskin 80th Crossway Anniversary editions from Crossway and Evangelical Bible, so I dinged it one star. But I’m not buying a Goatskin edition with its L.E.G.O. Italian print job on 2gsm heavier paper if I have to read that book block, with its alleged 9pt font. There was a time when I would have looked at a prettier face, but thankfully that has passed.
If you want an ESV Study Bible to use, get the large print. And they do offer their own very nice leather now on this readable edition. I have that cover on my now superfluous regular size edition, and it is very nice, and a LOT cheaper than goatskin.
