20 reviews for Cambridge ESV Topaz Reference Bible, Dark Blue Goatskin

This is my favorite Bible. I agree with all the other glowing reviews. I don’t have much to add, other than an update to how the Bible has held up over time. I purchased this one just over two years ago, and it is still the primary Bible I use everyday. It has held up well, it still looks brand new, and it has broken-in nicely. The only improvement Cambridge could make would be to produce a black-letter version. Other than that, it’s perfect.

The Topaz is by far my favorite Bible for everyday reading and study. The construction, gilding, binding is top quality, although not as fancy as some others, this Bible never disappoints and feels better over time. The fact that it reads bigger than 10pt is a big plus.

I received my fourth bible from Evangelical Bible today and I want to start by saying that customer service and speed of delivery is second to none – I was surprised to see it on my front porch several days before being expected. I had waited to order the Cambridge Topaz ESV with Blue goatskin until the cost was more in line with my previous purchases of the Quentel Wide Margin ESV in Marbled Calfskin and the CSB Quentel in Black Goatskin.

I have spent the day comparing the Cambridge with the Schuyler bibles and I must admit that there is little difference in quality – all are wonderfully made and truly deserve the moniker of being premium bibles. If there is anything I wanted to note is that when I close my eyes and run my hands over the Cambridge and the Quentel goatskins is that the Cambridge feels somewhat less soft and luxurious and would disqualify its normally higher price. I also note that the Cambridge does not have the gilt line on the inside cover but in it’s favor is the easier to find side cross-references.

One final quirk I have is that I am a sucker for the verse-by-verse format and the red verse numbers in the Cambridge. I also wish that they would have advanced the red coloring into the concordance as the Quentel does. I agree with a previous comment about the eye-popping maps and I also want to mention that the color coding of the map cross-references is unique and helpful.
I am truly a fan of Evangelical Bible and their selection of great Bibles.

The ESV Topaz from Cambridge is a modern day play on classic Bible typesettings. I appreciate Cambridge’s respect for the past while trying to innovate toward the future. A verse-by-verse Bible, as all classic KJV’s are, enables you to quickly find your place while ironically getting lost in a particular verse. The emboldened subject headings make it easy to distinguish key themes that the paragraph settings make up for in other Bibles. This is a Bible that is of the highest build quality. I hope you decide to make the purchase yourself!

Just got mine I ordered so this is all first impressions.

It was a difficult decision between this or the ESV Schuyler Quentel, also in blue. Ultimately after looking at the PDF samples I decided I liked the interior layout of this slightly better than the Quentel.

First the experience with EvengelicalBible.com has been great. They were quick to ship it, it arrived 2 business days (5 calendar days due to a long weekend) earlier than the original estimate provided by USPS once they received it. The packing showed great care, the box Cambridge put it in was placed in a bubble wrap envelope providing excellent cushioning during shipping. Then they also added some packing peanuts on top of that to reduce movement during shipping.

Once I unpacked the bible fully I could immediately tell I loved the feel of the goatskin leather. It had such a premium feel I almost don’t want to put it down. Quality wise its perfect I don’t detect any minor imperfections out of the box which is great.

The font inside is very readable, and in my opinion they have room to use a slightly smaller font and shrink the form factor a bit perhaps? Its not that it’s too big but I certainly wouldn’t want it any bigger and in fact would almost prefer it if they shaved a half inch or so from the height and width of it. The thickness is good and its got a slight heft to it but its not unwieldy. It is still portable enough to carry to church or bible study in my opinion without having to make the compromises you find in compact or personal size bibles.

It has a decent sized concordance built in and some really nice maps with a color coded Map Index.

Coming to the actual scriptures I really like the red chapter and verse numbers, they make for a nice accent. The only think that I think could have maybe made it better if if the accents were color matching to the leather cover, so in the case blue accents I think would have made an even nicer touch. It is a verse-by-verse layout which I am somewhat torn on. I see the benefit of this as well as a paragraph layout so I wan;t too picky about getting one or the other.

I do like that the words of Jesus are in red. I have personally gone back and forth on this. I remember liking it in my first bibles but later came to no really understand it, I mean its not like those words are any more inspired by the Holy Spirit. But I have recently come back around to appreciating that touch for the benefit it provides is understanding the flow of conversations easily at a glance without having to price together who said what by the He said, They said breaks.

All in all while I have had what I would consider mid-range Bible’s in the past this is my first Premium Bible and by far the most I have spent on one Bible, but it really does have the premium feel and I get the sense that this Bible will outlast me and be something I can hand down.

While there are some extremely minor things that I could say I think could be better, they came down to publishing and design choices rather than defects. And I am in no way disappointed with this purchase or think that it wasn’t worth the price.

I purchased this Bible because I wanted a more modern translation after using the KJV for many years. Boy, was I disappointed. This version is supposed to be a literal word for word translation, but it is not. I found that many parts of verses and even whole verses were left out that are firmly in the KJV.

Having said that, the construction of the Bible and the format is very nice. I like the subheadings and the typeface. The blue goatskin leather is very nice, as is the art gilting. I just can’t get over the missing verses, so this Bible is being returned.

This is a beautiful Bible. The blue goatskin is soft with a great texture and a very nice shade of blue. I was a little hesitant about the blue under gold gilding, but it is absolutely gorgeous. The layout of the text and references is excellent. As a pastor who preaches most Sundays, the Verse by Verse format makes locating references so much quicker and smoother. The font is small enough to keep this bible from being overly thick, yet large enough to be easy on the eyes. The red letter text is a rich red and reads nicely. The only small complaint is, as others have mentioned, that there are no paragraph markers. However, I don’t think that deserves a reduction in rating. It is an absolutely lovely Bible, great craftsmanship, and perfect for daily reading and/or preaching.

Recently purchased the Topaz in blue goat skin. The leather is sumptuous and a real pleasure to hold as it falls open in your hand. The font is large and is easy to read. I am especially please with the verses number references in red making very easy to find a reference. Like most fine Bibles the paper fine. I would have like something a little heavier but that is my only problem with the Topaz and it would certainly have not been a deal breaker. I am most pleased with my Topaz. I heartily recommend it if you are in the market for an ESV. You’ll find nothing better.

Just received my blue goatskin ESV topaz bible by Cambridge. The sheer quality of this bible blows me away from the sumptuous blue goatskin with soft calfskin liner, Smyth sewn, the special paper, printed by jongbloed, etc…. This is one of the finest bible’s I own and is going to be my daily reading bible. One thing I really like is the font, It’s not only large but also printed darker than other bible’s I own. The Lord’s words in a dark red are especially nice. Cambridge continues to awe me with their premium bible’s. Looking forward to more like this in other versions. Simply superb.

Well done by Cambridge. Wasn’t sure I wanted to spend over 200 on a Bible when there are so many great ones less than that, ESV Omega in particular. But the Blue Topaz is awesome. The color, the craftsmanship is second to none. The cambridge maps are always special with the details they add. I’m happy with this purchase.

A very nice Bible, that anyone familiar with Cambridge will feel right at home with.
I opted for the blue goatskin, which is a good looking shade of blue (a bit lighter than navy blue, and just a bit darker than Schuyler’s imperial blue-which is my favorite).
The dimensions are basically the same as the Cambridge Turquoise Reference Edition, so if you are familiar with that, you know what you will have here.

One thing that I will mention for any prospective buyers, and something that I have not seen mentioned in any reviews that I have read or watched online, is that the Topaz is prone to page curling depending upon ambient air temperature and humidity.

Overall a nice looking, easily read vbv, red letter presentation of the ESV.

Grace and peace to all of you, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

My wife purchased the for me as a graduation gift. This Bible is excellent. I have purchased a Schuyler NLT Caxton, ESV Wide-Margin Heirloom, NIV Allan, and an ESV Allan from Evangelical Bible. I have to say that, out of the box, this Cambridge Topaz is my personal favorite. It is the perfect size for teaching and preaching. The leather is soft and the grain has a great texture to it. Size wise – it is very similar to my ESV Wide Margin Heirloom, which had been my primary preaching and teaching Bible until now. The problem with the Heirloom was page curl. This paper feels a little more weighty and less flimsy than my Heirloom, so I don’t suspect this to be a problem. The font type and size are wonderful. The text does not run into the gutter at all, and the references on the side are a nice touch. Highly recommend the Bible.

A fantastic Bible that I’ve already used to preach from. The text is bold, crisp, and clear–easy to read on the surface of my pulpit. The verse-by-verse format makes finding and reading a verse very easy. This Bible (and I also own the Black goatskin version as well) is ideal for my ministry needs. I even find the concordance to be a usable size.

I received the blue goatskin Topaz today and am very impressed. Solid quality. Reminds me of BMW cars – well made and old world craftsmanship. The spine is well designed to lay flat but have support. The 28 gsm paper is thin but very opaque. The print is clear and crisp. The red letter text is very dark – almost a brown and very readable. The concordance is excellent and the maps are great. Very much worth the price!

I just received my Topaz Dark Blue ESV Cambridge Bible in the mail. My friend got it for me as a gift. I have been looking for a new bible for over 2 years but compromising on red letter, concordance etc…. BUT this one has everything!!! I DITTO the #3 review about font, softness of pages….etc…etc…
I AM THRILLED WITH THIS BIBLE!!! Looking forward to studying it!!!
    Thank You!!!

When Cambridge announced that their new Topaz Reference Bible would have 10 point font, verse-by-verse set up and line matching, I was very interested. I needed to purchase an ESV bible to read along in church during sermons. I am very happy to say that it is perfect for this use! The verse-by-verse feature and larger text is so helpful for keeping my place while reading it. I want to thank EV Bible for providing a sample PDF of the book of Matthew to read. It really helped convince me that this was the bible I was looking for.

Now as to the construction of the bible: I have several beautiful Schuyler bibles which I love and consider among the best in premium bibles. This is my first Cambridge bible, and I must say that I am impressed with its quality. The dark blue goatskin leather (darker than the picture) is gorgeous and supple. The ribbons are high quality that are comparable to ribbons on Schuyler Bibles. The art gilt is beautiful. It is gold over blue which adds to my reading pleasure. The paper is satiny smooth, the print nice and dark. In addition to these great features, it is also a red letter addition. I do love to read the words of Christ in red. The color is deep, not that kind of lighter red you see in less expensive bibles. This bible also comes with a great concordance, and 15 colorful maps printed on semigloss paper that is thicker than the scripture pages. Also included is a wonderful map index printed on the same type paper as the maps. This has everything I would ever want in a premium bible! Thank you, Cambridge for making such well thought-out Bible, and thank you EV Bible for excellent customer service as always!

At last an ESV in verse-by-verse layout and one that is printed by Jongbloed. I have been looking forward to getting one of these since I first heard it was in preparation. Now it is here and I couldn’t be more pleased with my copy. The text is very readable and well presented. I find the color of the maps dazzlingly attractive. The goatskin cover is soft, flexible and beautiful. Because of the verse-by-verse layout and the high quality of the printing and binding, I personally do not think any other ESV printing currently available surpasses this one. It is well worth the money.

Great bible a little below Schuyler not as good as Allan. The review copy I saw was remarkably uninspiring – it’s a decent bible but no better than their Turquoise which I like a lot (and still consider it the flagship of Cambridge). My black Goatskin Turquoise cost me £131 – this Topaz is much more expensive but as far as I’m concerned it simply doesn’t justify the much higher cost. You would do well to get the rare Cambridge leather lined Turquoise which is just as good and much cheaper.
