I just received this bible and it doesn’t disappoint!! My copy has tons of natural grain variations, wrinkles, etc, which I really enjoy. Such a gorgeous colourway!! I have always been a goatskin admirer, but am starting to enjoy calfskin equally much. I just never saw it delivered in such wonderful forms as Schuyler does it! Leather linings add so very much to the natural feel. Also, silver gilt is my favourite. I keep wondering if Schuyler might produce another edition with red under silver at some point.
On that note, I’m assuming each individual bible will be slightly different, but I would like to point out to interested buyers, that on my copies the leather “feel” varies substantially. The aniline calfskin being my favourite: very thick and sturdy and still very soft and supple—let alone the natural beauty of the grain that shines through! This black pearl is very aesthetically pleasing, and I LOVE the grain, but the leather itself feels much more processed, less flexible (more card-boardy?) and also doesn’t smell as strong. Of course it also doesn’t scuff as easily as the aniline. The goatskin I have is thick and supple and also has the leather smell, but again is more highly processed and doesn’t take a patina the same as aniline. It’s all a matter of personal preference.
The slate goatskin edition I have also has the same “marbled” finish as this black pearl, and also feels a bit stiffer and more artificial than my dark purple goatskin. I’m wondering if the wax applied during the marbling process is what is making the difference? No big deal in any case, and I’m expecting this Bible to break in beautifully as these Bibles always do.
This Bible did arrive with a loose thread on the edge stitching that was causing the stitches to come out. After careful inspection, I trimmed the thread, applied the tiniest dab of glue, and problem solved. Another gorgeous product!!!

I’ve bought quite a few Schuyler Bibles over the last year or so. And the Black Pearl NKJV is by far the most gorgeous yet. This new batch of black pearl calfskin is incredible. A very rich dark grey with amazing grain! I couldn’t be more pleased. I think this is the one!
