The Revised Standard Version (RSV) is a revision of the American Revised Version (1901) which was itself a revision of the King James Version (1611). The RSV was translated by 32 scholars along with 50 representatives of cooperating denominational bodies. The translation committee attempted to stay as close as possible to its rich Tyndale-King James heritage. “We have resisted the temptation to use phrases that are merely current usage, and have sought to put the message of the Bible in simple, enduring words that are worthy to stand in the great Tyndale-King James tradition.

I am so glad they print the RSV, it is the bible translation I prefer and it can be hard to find newer copies. I don’t really have too much to say besides it’s a very beautiful bible and love the drop caps.

If they ever reprint the RSV with Apocrypha, as I was a little too late in hearing about Schuyler and I prefer my bibles to have it, I will buy another bible.

This an absolutely beautiful Bible. The goatskin leather is very flexible, the text is clear and comfortable to read, and the blue dye under the art gilding is gorgeous. Schuyler’s attention to detail is really something special. I also appreciate that they print less common translations like the RSV. Reading this addition of the Bible has been such a pleasure. I thought I might never find a publisher that does not source from the Chinese Communist Party, so I am incredibly thankful that I found Schuyler. The French paper, Dutch binding, Indian goatskin, English ribbons, etc. it is all just flawless.

i just opened my new Schuyler Quentel RSV FY ( Full Yapp ) Overall, i absolutely love the bible, it’s beautiful and it’s pretty easy to read. i do, however, have two tiny little quips: the verse numbers are a bit small and hard to find but, it’s not impossible to find them. Also, i noticed that in about 3 places, there is a footnote from the book 1 Esdras which is from the book(s) of the Maccabees. what i don’t understand is: if the bible does not contain any of the Apocrypha, then why does it have those footnotes from the Apocrypha in it? However, after comparing with the ESV, it seems like the difference is very minor. One thing i almost forgot to mention is that: when i originally ordered this bible, i chose FedEx shipping but, it somehow defaulted to USPS which i definitely did not want. But, the thing i’m super happy about is that a very nice lady named Karen was able to help get the shipping switched to FedEx since i was able to call Customer Service soon enough and i was so grateful for Karen’s help that i wanted to give her a shoutout here in my review.

The Schuyler line of RSV Bibles is, I think, the best RSV printing (and binding) ever done. It has become my main reader. This particular color, Imperial Blue, is attractive and the blue under gold art gilding sets the text block off beautifully. The full yapp of this edition helps protect that beautiful art gilding. The six raised hubs and the letter stamping on the spine are just elegant.

The text is done in all black letter. Book names, chapter numbers and the page numbers in the header are a nice shade of red (brick red?). So are the chapter numbers in the text. The red drop caps that begin a chapter are ornate but not garish. The small olive branches that flank text chapter number are a nice touch too. The overall page layout is a feast for the eyes, designed to make reading it easy.

There is a “Concise Glossary and Concordance” that is useful but nothing exceptional. The maps are superb.
The RSV is (my opinion) the most pleasingly readable modern translation. It has the literary flavor of the King James Version but with clarity for contemporary readers. Psalm 90, verse 10 illustrates what I mean. Go online and read it in the KJV/RSV and then in any other modern version.

For more reasons to buy a Schuyler RSV read the other reviews of the various cover options. I wrote my review simply because this particular edition (Imperial Blue, full yapp, without Apocrypha) deserves at least one review and a 5-star one at that!
